Assistant Communications Engineer

The SEI helps advance software engineering principles and practices and serves as a national resource in software engineering, computer security, and process improvement. The SEI works closely with defense and government organizations, industry, and academia to continually improve software-intensive systems. Our core purpose is to help organizations improve software engineering capabilities and develop or acquire the right software, defect free, within budget and on time, every time. The CERT Division of the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) is seeking applicants for the Assistant Communications Engineer role. In this role, a successful candidate will employ a multi-disciple approach to investigate, test, and validate performance of Radio Frequency systems. They will support research and test and evaluation activities with the objective of ensuring operational reliability and resilience of deployed customer systems and platforms. This position requires strong professional and team environment skills. The SEI is a federally funded research and development center at Carnegie Mellon University. What you’ll do: Characterize and test RF communication and network systems Analyze and assess performance of RF systems Design and maintain physical and virtual RF test environments Automate data collection and testing processes Research novel approaches to affecting various wireless link and networks Research and implement novel approaches to security of various wireless systems and networks Who you are: You have a BS in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related field. You have a deep interest in RF systems and networks with a penchant for intellectual curiosity and a desire to make an impact beyond your organization. You have practical experience with evaluating performance of RF systems including modulation techniques, waveform analysis, and propagation. You have experience performing RF data analysis to understand and analyze RF environments based on collected data, and effectively communicating results and conclusions. You have experience testing, analyzing, evaluating, and documenting RF systems performance. You have strong teamwork skills especially with working in interdisciplinary teams with professionals from other fields in a multi-tasking environment. You have superb communication skills (oral and written), particularly regarding technical communications with non-experts. Applicants with a solid technical background in RF systems or cybersecurity foundations, but not both, are encouraged to apply provide a strong desire to rapidly learn on the job. You have a strong desire to learn and take on dynamic challenges applying your existing skills and developing new skills. You are able to: Travel to various locations to support the SEI’s overall mission. This includes within the SEI and CMU community, mission partner sites, conferences, and offsite meetings on occasion (10%). You will be subject to a background check and will need to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense security clearance. Why work here?
