In pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, Fire Red and Leaf Green you get Old Amber in Pewter City in the back of the museum and you obtain a fossil in Mt. Moon. Then you can give it to a scientist on Cinnebar Island. In Pokémon Diamond, Pearl and Platinum you can find a fossil in the underground and you bring it to the coal museum in Oreburgh City to the scientist. In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald you can find a fossil in the desert north of Mauville City and you should bring that to the building where you get your pokénav from in Rustboro City.
