Einstein was extremely high status but only moderately wealthy. If your status is high enough, you need less money because people just give you things. Wealthy people give away money to gain status (or maybe for fun). So, for some people who make a lot of money, it is more literally about score-keeping. Not being smarter, not the value of money.
