Mark J Chaudhry on Decrapify Work

Hi Colin, Congratulations of 200 articles on an extremely important topic that permeates our (work) lives. Likely – as you state – there is probably not that much separation about life outside work and life inside work. Thank you for your continued effort on shining a light on crappy work. Your musings remind me of things such as “pseudo work” and “bull…. Jobs”. You list quite a few thematic work challenges - such as “Work is seriously damaging to your health and possibly fatal.”, “Employers don’t trust or care for their employees.”, “Don’t listen to what they say, it’s gaslighting and propaganda. Judge them by what they do.” and “Burnout isn’t a bug, it’s a feature of a system that is exploitative and extractive by design”. I fully and wholeheartedly agree with you that work should not be crappy – rather work should be meaningful and result in happiness – and not the opposite – such as frustrations, stress, disengagement and burnout – and worst case “dying for a paycheck”. Do you believe that it is a general “truth” that employers do not trust employees – and maybe vice versa – that employees do not trust employers? And if that is the case – do you have any ideas about what could be done about to the benefit of society – so both employees and employers? Thank you again for your “Decrapify Work” writings.
