The discussion of grammar is fascinating to me. I loved learning the rules way back when I was in school. Then, during a conversation with one of my son's teachers (many years after I graduated from high school and college), I learned that grammar isn't taught anymore, that students would learn by inference. This method is problematic for certain learners (like me and my son) who need concrete instruction. I can infer, sure, but often wrongly and then it takes months, years for me to unlearn what I "know." Fortunately, my son took journalism and was taught rules by his instructor.
