I think an important distinction to be made here is that such regimes fundamentally didn't serve a short-sighted "quarterly capitalism" agenda - cozy as they often were with Capital otherwise - and made a point of keeping the silent majority of their subjects reasonably content with their lot because that was Hell of a lot cheaper and easier than suppressing widespread unrest. Carrot and stick, as it were. The crypto-fascists of today appear to be quite missing that lesson.
