I think they will likely go into camp with what they have (though a DE that Peters was part of drafting in the 2nd round in San Fran was just cut by the 49ers, so perhaps they jump on that). A signing like Clowney or even a Za’Darius Smith is something they can do midway through training camp. Probably spend the first week or two seeing how things play out, then if nobody looks like stepping up or if they feel they are light, can check in with a few vet free agents and add them then, knowing a guy like Clowney or Smith is experienced enough to keep themselves in good shape and be able to come in and get ready to go quicker than some of the younger guys they might have in the building now. That way they can see what they’ve got, mix up the rotation and give someone a chance to earn the job. If they do, then great, if not there’s always a fall back option.
