There are two types of twin, monozygotic (identical) or dizygotic (fraternal, non-identical) and each type is created in a different way explained below: 1) Monozygotic Twins. These type of twins both com from the same fertilized (zygote) and so have exactly the same genetic make up and will look exaclty like one another. Once the zygote has developed up to a certain point it splits into two, separate zygotes. This is often because the mother has received a mild bump, not enough to be fatal, to the stomach. These two new zygotes will go on to grow and develope as normal although they may well be stunted in size because of the lack of space to grow and because they share the same placenta and to have to compete for nutrition. 2)Dizygotic Twins. These type of twins com from two separate eggs and so are only as similar as any two brother/sister compination. This type of twin occurs when both of the mothers overied are active at the same time and both produce and ovum. The fathers sperm is easily enough to fertalize the two eggs both of which will then implant into the uterus and develope into babies. These type of twins, unlike the ones above, each have their own placentas so the only reason for them to be stunted in size is the lak of space.
