In the case of a safety apparatus for pistols having a hammer mechanism, the latter comprises the hammer 4 which acts on the firing pin 13, a hammer spring 10 and a sear 3 for the hammer 4. The sear 3 has two blocking surfaces 15, 16. When the hammer 4 is not cocked, the one blocking surface 16 supports the firing pin 13 and the other blocking surface 15 supports the hammer 4 in the direction in which it is acted upon. In order to allow the pistol to be kept safely in a holster or the like when the hammer is cocked, a safety lever 22 is mounted externally, such that it can pivot, on the one side of the pistol grip 20, and can be operated by the thumb of the hand which is holding the grip 20. The safety lever 22 has a link 24 which runs essentially radially with respect to the sear pivoting shaft 17, and the sear is provided with an attachment 27 which passes through the side wall 20' of the grip 20 in a slot or the like. This attachment 27 engages in the link 24, has a sliding block in the locked position, with the hammer 4 cocked. <IMAGE>
