Probably try to use different elements to easily defeat the gyms, I don't know. Probably no Rattata's or Pidgey's, Spearow's are more powerful, just stick to a few Pokemon when you start off until you have the chance to catch useful and powerful ones. Though if you want you can catch all the weak Pokemon to add to you PokeDex, but if you need guys for battling it's better to wait until you are around Vermillion, there are a lot of powerful and cool wilfd Pokemon around there. Nidoran, Drowzee, Butterfree, Geodude, Pikachu(In Viridian Forest), But its hard to get water Pokemon at that point in the game.
