There are many ways to get wood: 1) Just go in a forest (preferably birch or spruce because the trees are taller) and chop down trees like crazy. In no time, you'll have more wood than you'll ever need. Make sure you bring a lot of axes :P 2) If you have a lot of space, a lot of saplings, and a lot of bone meal (one bone in crafting table = 3 bone meal), you can place the sapling and then hold right-click with bone meal in your hand until the tree grows. This is useful when there are no trees near you. Remember to pick up all the saplings that drop when you mine the logs! 3) I used this automatic wood generator in 1.5.2 but I'm not sure if it works in the 1.6 update. Basically, when a boat catches fire in lava, it drops the item, but if it crashes into something, it drops 2 sticks and 3 planks. When both happen at the same time, both the boat and the sticks/planks drop. With hoppers and updated dispensers in 1.5, you can make the process completely automatic (hoppers pick up dropped boats and load it into a dispenser to fire again; planks and sticks go in a seperate chest).
