I buy a lot of non perishable stuff to snack on, carry a bottle of wine and a six pack of my own beer in carry on, pack music and some cool books, and made sure I was paying attention during the best bits: going through the Rockies west of Denver into Wyoming and Utah as well as the Puget Sound corridor. They are quite nice, I thought. It can be boring, Sorry, Nebraska. But I have always managed to have fun on a budget. edit to add, I used to cross the country on Amtrak pretty regularly when my parents were alive circa 1990's. I hated airports even then.
