Yes do give it a go! I started with a cheap kick wheel from ebay and also hand-building pots, I fired them in an incinerator bin with sawdust and woodchips. Though the ceramics weren't functional in use (still porous), there was some very interesting effects from the naked flame. It was a more affordable way to get started on pottery without kiln costs.
