Thank you for this comment. I think Sidgwick is a bit underappreciated. It seems inevitable that his thinking might have evolved had he possessed the wealth of neuropsychological knowledge available to us today. I’m not sure he would have abandoned his metaphysical views, but it’s definitely easier to think things through when you’ve got more information to work with. In that sense, we’ve got the advantage over past thinkers by standing on the shoulders of even more giants than them—an advantage that, in turn, will become a limitation when future generations examine our own work.
