He, like so many celebrities today, have anointed themselves as more important than the rest of us. It's this narcissistic, self-important attitude that ultimately becomes unfunny - no matter how you package it. The other issue is that these celebrities are so out of touch with the general public. They've isolated themselves into their cozy cocoon of like-minded coastal parasites who are intoxicated with self-righteousness and groupthink. In the old days, guys like Carson, Letterman, and Jay still walked amongst the rest of us, even despite their protective celebrity status. This helped ground them to the "common folk." When you can't step out of your ivory tower once in awhile, it's impossible not to turn into someone completely unlikeable, and unrelatable (Howard Stern, are you listening?) The bigger issue is, the big shiny studio talk show model is dead. Full stop. It's been bloated for too long. A 200 person staff and overbudget by $40m? Doesn't matter how funny you are, or what your politics are. Just do the math. R.I.P. late night.
