He played on many important records of different styles at that time, from hard bop to free jazz. He began leading his own group, the Yoshio Ikeda Quintet, in the mid-70s and released his first album with them, Sketch Of My Life, in 1978. The following year he released Anemophilous Flower. While his previous album focused on songs with a darker nature, the compositions on Anemophilous Flower are larger in dynamics, with a livelier and more flamboyant feel to them. Previously Ikeda collaborated with vocalists such as Ichiko Hashimoto and Eri Ohno, but here he features Kimiko Itoh, whose voice gives the sound of the ensemble a supreme sense of balance.
