Kris on Courageous Conversations

As someone who quit reading fiction 45 years ago, and has only read non-fiction ...and especially memoirs...the host's question about "where were the fact checkers" could be said of any number of "memoirs" from the past 45 years. Over and over "memoirs" have been outed as fabrications. I don't read memoir sensations that come from unknown authors, suddenly catapulted into fame...that end up immediately becoming films. I can discern the truth when the reviews are always about life-changing-spiritual-journeys. It's all the same grifter pablum. To find a really riveting memoir...with NO CHANCE of fabrication...one must pull a dusty tome from the forgotten library stacks. I'm not going to list all the fakes from the nineties...but anyone can find them online. Authenticity is excedingly rare these days. However, I have found that truly authentic folks are never taken in by fakery that appeals to the emotions.
